I was recently introduced to the Mikuti collection, and got an exclusive look at their 2012 summer lookbook over the weekend.  I was inspired by the lines Eco conscious perspective who partners with workshops and individuals in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda to deliver a culturally infused collection of statement pieces that speak to the sun as much as the history of the people behind its design.
The Mikuti’s summer collection focuses on bold, radiant colors and classic versatile pieces, which can carry into the fall season.
The line features Mikuti’s Perfect Stack All Dressed Up, which is a best seller. With their neutral and earthy colors, wrapped with tribal-inspired fabric they are perfect for the summer. They match any summer outfit, and their lightweight nature makes them easy to wear in any environment. They also carry the Musa Bangles which come in various colors, mixing glass Czech with a special wrapping technique on top of the crisp shiny silver; these are my favs! The collection often employs natural materials including banana bark, recycled aluminum and local textiles.
I love the fact that this line pays fair trade wages, and in so doing is creating an employment chain, and supporting small local workshops in East Africa. As stated on their website Mikuti was featured at Mara Hoffman’s Resort Swim Show at Miami Fashion, was showcased at last year’s Swahili Fashion Week in Tanzania, London’s Fashion Week this past winter, and most recently The Hub of African Fashion Week in Addis, Ethiopia. Great line, great initiative!

See more after the jump!
