What Is The Difference Between Hair Wax And Hair Gel?

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 05:17 AM PST

Today, one has many different options in hair products to help hold different styles in place. Three such products are hair wax, pomade, and hair gel. However, not everyone is familiar with the different products. Therefore, we shall attempt to answer the question, “What is the difference between hair wax and hair gel?”

Hair wax is exactly what the name states. It is a type of wax that can be applied to the hair to produce a very stiff hold. It is most often used with hairstyles such as a liberty spike or a spiked Mohawk. This is because wax holds the hair in place for its full length.

When wax is applied to the hair, it hardens, creating a very stiff hold. It does not wear off or lose its hold under normal wear. It must be washed and combed out of the hair to remove it. Under certain circumstances, the wax can be broken and need to be reapplied to keep the hairstyle looking the way it was intended.

Hair gel is a different product altogether. It is used to provide a more natural looking hold that is not stiff to the touch. It is not strong enough, normally, to make the hair stand up in tall spikes. However, it is quite handy for creating small, short spikes that make the hair look mussed up.

Gel can be applied to damp hair to create a wet look that many men find attracts women when they go out to clubs and bars. There are many different levels of hold available in gel. Men must, therefore, experiment and choose the level that best suits their needs.

Despite the ability to make dry hair look damp, gel does not make hair look greasy if used properly. Too much can be applied, leaving the hair looking like it is coated in axle grease or giving the appearance of wearing a plastic helmet. Wax, on the other hand, by its very nature makes one look like his hair has been fashioned into a helmet if it is not used specifically to create long spikes.

Given the number of different hair products on the market, it is no wonder some men become confused about which is which and what each is used for. Hopefully, we have answered the question, “What is the difference between hair wax and hair gel?” in a manner that makes the differences clear and easy to understand.
