True Herstory: Beverly Johnson

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 08:01 AM PDT

New True Queen features; True Herstory.  I’ve been craving new knowledge of my own history and the history that has shaped so much of what the world is today.  In order to help quench that thirst and maybe share and enlighten my finding with my readers True Herstory was born!

In 1974 Beverly Johnson made history by being the first black woman to cover American Vogue.  An incredible accomplishment when you think that this happened in my mothers life time…

Her journey as a fashion model began in 1971  after being turned down by Ford Modelling agency she was accepted into a specialized black modelling agency called Black Beauty. She  went on to be featured in various magazines like Glamour, landed the cover of French Vogue where she also left her mark as the first black woman to appear on its illustrious pages.

Her study of acting with Lee Strasberg in the 70′s lead her to various film roles including Deadly Hero, National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon and more recently cameos in The Waynes Bros in 95′ and Law and Order.

She’s appeared on over 500 magazine covers, she has her own well established line of black hair and beauty products, and has written a book True Beauty: Secrets of Radiant Beauty for Women of Every Age and Color.

Fun Fact: She also studied Criminal Justice at Northeastern University.  Always good to have a solid back up plan!

She’s since opened the doors to various models we see walk the runways today, despite and unfortunate scarcity, we can only embrace and support the women who are taking their rightful place in the spotlight.  And further propel and promote those still fighting for a chance.
